90-Day Workout Challenge with a Friend

Twenty minutes of movement every day, with a workout buddy on the other end.

What it is

The challenge: move for at least 20 minutes every day for 90 days. Gym sessions, runs, home workouts, sport, dancing or a brisk walk all count. Twenty minutes is low enough to fit into your worst day, and that's the whole design.

Workout buddies are the oldest accountability trick there is, and you don't need to train together for it to work. Each of you checks in when you've moved, and seeing that your friend already has is a better push than any playlist.

Ninety days lets you train in blocks. Plan a different focus for each 30-day cycle with your partner, and re-commit at the end of each one so the streak carries on.

How to do it

  1. Define what counts before day one: 20 minutes of deliberate movement, your choice of what.
  2. Plan the week with your partner on Sunday: which days are hard sessions and which are easy ones.
  3. Check in when you've done your 20 minutes. Stretching or a walk counts on recovery days.
  4. Easy days are allowed. Zero days aren't.

Day by day

  1. Days 1–3

    Set it up

Pick what counts and schedule the first week. Start easier than you think you need to: the first goal is to show up every day, not to be sore.

  2. Days 4–30

    The novelty wears off

Soreness and motivation both peak. Alternate hard and easy days so you can keep going daily, and check in with your partner at the same time each day.

  3. Days 31–72

    The long middle

The excitement fades and life gets in the way. This is where most workout challenges end. On busy days lower the bar to a 20-minute walk, and keep the check-in.

  4. Days 73–90

    The finish line

Look back at the tracker with your partner and pick the routine you'll keep. A slightly smaller routine you keep beats the challenge version you drop.

Milestones over 90 days

Days 30 and 60: re-commit

Re-commit at day 30 and again at day 60. Each time, talk with your partner about what's working and change one thing. A 90-day challenge is three 30-day ones in a row, not one long slog.

  1. Day 30: block one done

The first block is about showing up. Look at the tracker with your partner: which days were hardest, and what got you through them? Keep that, and pick a focus for the next 30 days, like strength, distance or a skill.

  2. Day 60: block two, and the plateau

Progress slows in the second month. That's the moment to change the workout, not to stop. Swap one type of session, or set a small, measurable goal you can check at day 90.

  3. Day 90: the routine you keep

Three months of daily movement is a routine, not a challenge. Decide with your partner how many days a week you'll keep after this, and set the pact's schedule to match.

Where people quit, and how a partner helps

  • The skipped Monday

One missed day turns into a missed week when nobody notices. A partner who notices is the point. Agree to message each other after a miss, not to judge, just to say you'll be back tomorrow.

  • Too much, too soon

Going hard in the first week leads to soreness, injury or burnout by the second. The 20-minute minimum exists so easy days still count. Use them.

  • The schedule collapse

A busy week wipes out the sessions you planned. Have a fallback that needs no equipment and no travel, like a walk or a short home routine, and tell your partner which one you used.

How to start it in the app

  1. Create your free account, then install Friends with Habits from Google Play and sign in.
  2. Tap New Pact and pick “Work out” under Movement & Exercise.
  3. The template suggests 3 days a week. For this challenge, change it to every day.
  4. Invite your friend by link, text or email. Once they accept, you both check in each day and see each other's progress.
  5. A pact in the app runs 30 days. Re-commit when it ends, and again at day 60, and your shared streak carries across all 90 days.

Questions

Do walks count in a workout challenge?

Yes, a brisk 20-minute walk counts. The challenge is about moving every day, and walks are what keep easy days from becoming zero days.

Do we need to work out together?

No. Most partners train at different times and places. Each of you checks in, and the app shows the other one that you have.

Can I take rest days?

Make them active: stretching, yoga or a walk. If you'd rather have real rest days, set the pact to five or six days a week instead of every day.

Should I work out hard every day for 90 days?

Move every day, but don't train hard every day. Most days should be easy: a walk, stretching, an easy ride. Two or three hard sessions a week is plenty, and it's how people reach day 90 without getting hurt.

Is 90 days too long?

It's a real commitment, which is why it's done as three 30-day pacts. Each re-commit is a natural point to check in with your partner. If you're unsure, start with 30 and re-commit if it's going well.

What happens if one of us misses a day?

Your partner sees it, and the app nudges you both. Check in honestly and pick it back up the next day. People who finish a challenge are rarely the ones who never missed; they're the ones who came back the day after.

What if I don't have a friend doing this challenge?

An accountability partner doesn't need to be a close friend or an expert, only someone who'll notice. A coworker, a sibling or someone from a group chat works. Invite one person; most people say yes to a challenge with an end date.

Do we both need the app?

Yes. Each of you checks in from your own phone, which is the point: you see when your partner has done it today, and they see you. Friends with Habits is on Android via Google Play today, and an iPhone version is next.

Is it free?

Yes. Friends with Habits is free to download and free to use, with no card. A free account tracks a limited number of active habits at a time, which leaves plenty of room for one challenge.
